Aren't these flowers gorgeous? Would you believe that they are entirely made of paper? And that they are all 23" to 36" in diameter? We'll, they are. Rad, yes?

These pretties are the creations of San Francisco based architect/artist Tiffanie Turner and are part of a show called “Heads” that is currently showing at Rare Device here in the City. I for one am still not over that fact that these are so incredibly realistic and intricate. They really are things of beauty - I wonder if my mama would prefer one of these to the traditional flowers I usually send her for Mother's Day.

Thursday's Tidbit

I always have such high hopes for crafting around Easter, but somehow the holiday slips by me, and I have exactly zero beautifully decorated eggs to show for it. This year my hopes are yet again high, but ... the proximity to my due date makes me think I might yet again be Easter egg-less at the end of the month. Oh well. Maybe next year I'll make something stunning like these bad boys.

Supplies:
  • Eggs, hard-boiled or hollowed out
  • Craft paint (colors of your choice, but you can't beat a pastel at Easter)
  • Paint brushes
  • Drying rack (optional)
  • Decoupage glue/mod podge
  • Foil confetti (similar here and here)
Method:
  1. Paint those eggs and let dry completely.
  2. Once dry, apply a thin coat of mod podge to the part of the egg you want covered in confetti.
  3. Then immediately sprinkle confetti over the mod podge till it’s covered - let dry completely.
  4. That's it! Boom.

Happiness has definitely been a theme 'round these parts, it's obviously a topic I feel worth revisiting and exploring. So let's discuss. Have you read this article about 10 things scientifically proven to boost happiness? Well, if not - let me break it down.

  1. Exercise more
  2. Sleep more
  3. Move closer to work, a long commute is a happiness zapper
  4. Spend time with friends and family
  5. Get yo boot outside
  6. Help others, can you commit to 100 hours a year?
  7. Smile - even fi you have to fake it to make it
  8. Plan a trip (taking it is optional)
  9. Meditate
  10. Practice gratitude

What to think? Seems pretty doable right? You can read all the scientific supporting evidence here.

This instillation by photographer Autumn de Wilde titled Lighting, Layers and Reflections takes my breath away. It seems this was built for a commercial shoot, but I don't care, I think this is beautiful.  I love how from the mirrored sided these little houses almost disappear, while the colored sides are such a shocking addition to the landscape. Stunners.

Are you a beard fetishist?

I'm not begging the hubs to go full mountain man, but there's something about a little scruff that's soo sexy. Amarite? What about you dolls? Beads por vida? Or do you prefer another kind of facial hair on your guy? Or maybe you like 'em clean shaven?

Super straight, super sleek, super shiny hair - are you in?

Well, according to the cracker jack team at Into the Gloss, you should be. The major power players are all rolling out their Spring 2014 ads and this fully manicured look is featured - prominently.  "So far 10 major fashion houses have employed the slick style in their campaigns: Versace, Valentino, Givenchy, Miu Miu, Missoni, and Prada."

Personally, I'm all about it. A straight blow out plus a finish with a flat iron is much easier in my opinion than a bouncy blow out and a curling iron show down. The Into the Gloss team recommends "cleansing and conditioning with Redken’s Diamond Oil collection, blowdrying with a flat, boar-bristle brush, and smoothing flyaways with a spritz of Balmain's weightless Silk Perfume, or ... with a few drops of Aesop Shine."

Do you dig it too? Will you be rocking this look come spring? Or earlier?

2014 Resolutions

Thursday, January 2, 2014

Did you dolls make any resolutions for this year? Two years ago I made several little resolutions, then last year I decided to focus on one main resolution. This year I don't really have a resolution per se, but I do have a few things I want to work on - patience and balance.

I feel like this coming year I will really need to remind myself that patience is a virtue. I will need to be patient with myself and with the hubs as we become parents later this year, and I'm sure I'll need to remind myself to be patient with our baby girl as well. Being a family of three will be new to all of us. Balance is something that I continually strive for, and I'm sure this will only be more complicated and important as I become a new mom. I don't really have set goals here, other than to keep these two principles top of mind as the year wears on, and to strive for both. Wish me luck!

PS: Tips for keeping your resolutions, whatever they may be.

Big news ...

Thursday, December 19, 2013

We're having a baby girl! I had a feeling she was a little lady, but I didn't want to make any assumptions until we knew for sure - and now we do!

I'm over the moon picturing tutus, tea parties, and dress-up dates. The hubs is a little nervous picturing first dates, prom, and boyfriends. What can you do? At least we have sometime before we have to start really worrying about all that. :-)

I have so many hopes for this little one. It's amazing how well I feel I know her already, how much  I love her.

Thursday's Tidbit

Thursday, December 12, 2013

I was in the sixth grade when this beautiful version of Romeo + Juliet premiered. I went to see the movie with a group of girlfriends (feeling super grown up that our parents had let us see a movie on our own, even if they would all be waiting for us in the parking lot by the time it ended) and was totally swept away. From the first scene, I was completely transfixed. The movie was just so ... cool! I fell completely and inconsolably in love with Leo, when he died at the end I was completely heart broken. I sobbed on my way out of the theater, on the car ride home, and may have cried myself to sleep that night. To cope, I bought the soundtrack and listened to it on repeat for approximately a year.  What can you do?

Thursday's Tidbit

Thursday, December 5, 2013

It's December dolls, the end of the year is riiight around the corner. Has 2013 been good to you all? I sure hope so. It's been an interesting one for my little family and I - a lot of ups and downs, but I suppose that's to be expected from a whole twelve months. In any case it's a good time to reflect a bit.

Speaking of, I just read this post on Mind Body Green about creating a self reflection ritual of your own at the end of the year. Sounds a little daunting, but the questions below are a good place to start.

25 Questions to Ask Yourself Before the End of 2013
1. What am I most proud of this year?
2. How can I become a better _____________?
3. Where am I feeling stuck?
4. Where do I need to allow myself grace?
5. Am I passionate about my career?
6. What lessons have I learned?
7. What did I my finances look like?
8. How did I spend my free time?
9. How well did I take care of my body, mind, and soul?
10. How have I been open-minded?
11. When did I feel most creatively inspired?
12. What projects have I completed?
13. How have I procrastinated?
14. In what ways can I re-structure my time?
15. How have I allowed fear of failure hold me back?
16. Where has self-doubt taken over?
17. When have I felt the most alive?
18. How have I taught others to respect me?
19. How can I improve my relationships?
20. Have I been unfair to anyone?
21. Who do I need to forgive?
22. Where is it time to let go?
23. What old habits would I like to release?
24. What new habits would I like to cultivate?
25. How can I be kind to myself?
What do you think loves, wanna give it a go? Do you have any special end of year rituals?

Thanksgiving Tidbit

Thursday, November 28, 2013

Happy Thanksgiving dolls!

On this day of thanks hopefully you are able to take a quiet moment to not only be thankful and present, but to also reflect on ways to make your days more mindful and live with more gratitude. I thought I'd take this opportunity to slow down for a moment and share this beautiful list (via the Thought Catalog) of things we should all try to make a little time for.

1. Writing things by hand. Letters to friends, lists for the store, goals for the week, notes for lovers, thank you cards and memos to coworkers. Digital communication is easy and convenient but ask anybody: there’s a huge difference between texting someone to say that you love them and hope they have a great day and writing it on a note and leaving it next to their bed.
2. Savoring time to do nothing. Taking a cue from pre-industrialized society and cultures that enjoy siestas and long, drawn-out, sit-down teas that serve no other purpose than to spend time enjoying the time you have.
3. Thinking before responding. We’ve become too conditioned to require things immediately. Someone asks a question, and we have to respond that second. Such was not the case before instant messaging and comment threads. A sign of true intelligence and confidence, I think, is someone who takes time to consider the question at hand in a little more depth, and then offers a response.
4. Cooking a nice meal just for the sake of doing so. It really trains you to defy your need for instant gratification and of course puts you in touch with something that’s very human and can be lovely if done right.
5. Getting really dressed up for no other reason than just wanting to.
6. Books. Actual hard copy books that you can scribble notes in and mark off sections of and smell ink through and hear the sound of turning pages and bending spines while you read.
7. Making phone calls to relatives for no other reason than to just say hi, and to ask how they’re doing.
8. Disconnecting from technology frequently enough that we won’t be anxious and feeling like we’re missing something when we try to do so for an extended period of time.
9. Celebrating things with long, multiple course dinners that we hold for people as opposed to just drinking ourselves into an oblivion and being belligerent (that has it’s time and place, of course, but having thoughtful, celebratory dinners is a dying art).
10. Cleaning because it’s satisfying and doing things like painting walls or getting fresh flowers just because it’s therapeutic.
11. Spending time with kids, and doing kid things with them. They just know what’s up.
12. Answering things in a timely fashion, not putting off invitations and requests just because we can.
13. Making sure relationships are actually based on time spent with one another. People seem to be sustaining them through only digital means with increasing frequency and I can understand how that’s important if it’s temporarily long distance but in general, physically being with people is the only thing that will give you that sense of human connectedness.
14. Just sitting and listening to music. We’ve made music background noise in our everyday lives, but now and again we should just sit and enjoy it like people used to.
15. Traveling by train, or if that’s not possible, at least exploring places that you pass everyday. Especially if you live in a big city, there are always little hidden gems around that you won’t believe you lived without seeing while they were a block away from you all along.
16. Putting personal health and well-being first, as it often falls to the wayside in importance. This means, aside from the obvious, taking those personal days and using them to just relax. We’ve made such a quirky commodity out of enjoying napping and relaxing, as though doing so makes us boring and old. It doesn’t, it’s healthy.
17. Planning something, especially with someone else, as simple as dinner or as grandiose as a long vacation next year. You always need something to look forward to.
18. Stopping to talk to people throughout the day. Connecting with them genuinely, as such interaction is really important but is becoming increasingly less common. Turning our phones off when out to dinner (who even turns them off anymore?) and learning to not spend all of our time documenting whatever we’re doing for social media. It often takes away from the experience itself.
Lovely right? See the original post here.

Elle Eyre is a rockin' 19 year old Brit. She's been compared to Gnarls Barkley and Adele. Not too shabby. Listen to her song "Deeper" hereShe describes the track as "about an experience I had when you're with someone and they drop those three words and when they say it you don't feel the same." I dare you not to sing along.

Look out for her full album, to be released on December 10th, just in time for Christmas.

Do you frequently apologize? I do, I am constantly saying "I'm sorry." It's something I'm working on - actively. I fully believe in the magic of a sincere, and warranted, apology, but as women it feels like we've been socially conditioned to apologize for the littlest things, for taking up space, for existing... Let's stop. Let's just stop. We can do it together.

Here is a list of the nine things that women most commonly apologize for, but shouldn't. Seems like a good place to start, right?
  1. For not wanting sex
  2. For liking "girly" things
  3. When they don't mean it
  4. For having a period
  5. For not looking nice
  6. For saying sorry
  7. For getting ready
  8. For everyone else
  9. For having feelings
Any of these resonate with you? I'm always apologizing for apologizing (sorry!). Like I said, I'm working on it.

This is going to sound totally Stepford of me, but I actually really like cleaning. Before you roll your eyes, hear me out. I like it because not only does it give me a sense of calm and control in a chaotic world, it's also a great work out. Apartment therapy recently posted about this, here is there breakdown of calorie burning chores:
  • Vacuuming and Sweeping: (burn 240 calories/hour)
  • Scrubbing Floors: (burn 325 calories/hour)
  • Stairs: (burn 250 calories/hour)
  • Childcare: (burn 205 calories/hour)
  • Cooking: (burn 150 calories/hour)
  • Laundry (repetitive bending): (burn 260 calories/hour)
  • General Cleaning (dishes, dusting): (burn 200 calories/hour)
  • Shoveling Snow: (burn 415 calories/hour)
  • Mowing the Lawn: (burn 325 calories/hour)
  • Raking Leaves: (burn 235 calories/hour)
Feeling a little more motivated? Me too!

8 Things Every Happy Woman Should Have

I must admit that I was inspired by this article and then by this fun post, so I thought I'd share my eight things.

1. A go-to drink: I have to admit that I'm usually a chardonnay kind of gal, but when I'm feeling fancy it's a French 75 all the way.

2. A go to karaoke song: Nancy Sinatra "These Boots Were Made for Walking"

3. A uniform: Skinny jeans, striped shirt, biker jacket, and either moccasins or wedges. Make-up wise I'm all about a cat eye, major lashes, rosy cheeks, and a neutral lip.

4. A hair stylist they love: Lookin' at you Mike Page

5. An exercise routine: Lately it's been Tracy Anderson or yoga in the morning along with a LOT of brisk walking.

6. A hobby: Well, I blog. :-) Umm, does shopping count? I also journal and draw or paint occasionally.

7. A best friend: I'm blessed to have many amazing friends in my life - you know who you are and I cherish you.

8. A healthy sense of self: Well this is a work in progress, but I think I'm getting there. When I think of where I was at 19 compared to where I am at 29 - leaps and bounds my friends. I might not be fully evolved just yet, but I like myself and am feeling more comfortable in my own ski every year.

What about you dolls, what are your 8 things? Anything you'd add or subtract?
I think I'd add kitties somewhere here fo sho ...
