Year One

Thursday, November 29, 2012

Check me out! Today is a big day, it's the first anniversary of Tickle My Fancy!

I know right?! I can't believe it's been a year already either, but then on the other hand it feels like it's been ten (in a good way). I originally started this blog to fill the creative void left after I finished planning my wedding, but it's become so much more than that. When I started this baby I had no idea how important it would become to me, or how special the community I would find myself apart of could be. Yes it's a place to share beauty tips, crafts, and recipes but it's also a place to explore relationships, art, and larger issues like lovefeminism and those who inspire me

It's amazing how quickly bloging became such a meaningful part of my daily life. It's become equal parts scrapbook, journal, idea log, and inspiration file. So far it's been an amazing ride. I'm so excited to see where it goes from here and I can't thank you all enough for being a part of this with me. It meas a lot. xo!

ps: my first post.

Glitter Feathers

Wednesday, November 28, 2012

Aren't these gold tipped feathers beautiful? You just need three things to recreate these sparkly numbers for yourself: feathers, gold paint, gold glitter. Dip the feathers in the paint, shake the glitter over the paint, let dry, and boom! Done, pretty feathers for whatever your heart desires.

Feather garland? Boom. Feather detail on a balloon bouquet? Boom. Feathers for your hair? Boom. Should I go on? No? Boom. (I could go on, actually.)

Wed Day

I've been thinking a lot about this quote lately. I think it beautifully describes how the hubs and I came to be. It wasn't a firecracker that brought us together, just the realization that that's what we both wanted. acquaintance->friends->lovers->partners. A smolder more than an explosion. At least that's how it was for me; if you ask the hubs he might say that was his plan all along. ;-)

How about you? Are you all about the explosion or the slow smolder in a relationship?

Holiday Table Scape

Tuesday, November 27, 2012

Things just got festive up in this beezie. I've been on a seasonal table scape kick lately, so why not keep it up for Christmas? Two Crate&Barrel gold glitter trees (from a few seasons back), plus one oversized ornament, plus three candle holders, and you're done. Boom!

Tuesday's Tips & Tricks

Meet "Mother Dough," sounds formidable, no? Well it is actually, it's one basic dough recipe  that with a few quick additions, can be transformed into six different holiday cookies. Such a sweet time saver.

Ingredients:

• 2 cups flour
• ½ tsp baking powder
• ¼ tsp salt
• pinch ground nutmeg
• 1 cup butter
• 1 cup packed brown sugar
• 1 egg
• 1 tsp vanilla

Directions:

1. Combine first four ingredients in a bowl.
2. Cream together butter and sugar. Beat in egg and vanilla.
3. Mix in half the dry ingredients, then add what is remaining.
4. Divide dough in half and wrap with plastic wrap until ready to use.

This makes enough for two batches of cookies, so divide in half once mixed if you aren't planning to make both batches at once. You can find all the variations on this basic recipe here

Home for the holidays

Monday, November 26, 2012

As you know, last week I flew the coop, literally. I flew SFO -> IAD the Friday before Thanksgiving to spend the holiday week with my Dad, StepMom, StepSis, and baby nephew in Northern Virginia (just outside of Washington DC). The hubs joined on Wednesday and we stayed through Saturday.

It was a pretty low key week - time to exhale, recharge, and feast - for Thanksgiving dinner, my Dad and StepMom prepared the works! See the top photo for evidence. We had two turkeys (one BBQ-ed, and one roasted), mashed potatoes, peas, dressing, cranberry sauce, sweat potato casserole, pumpkin pie, pumpkin pecan cake, and a chocolate pie. Whew! The leftovers were insane. I almost went home with turkey and cranberry sauce stuffed in my jacket pockets.

Aside from eating, it was amazing to have some uninterrupted family time. I went on long walks with the family hound, Tucker (bottom photo), gave my nephew lot's of tummy kisses, went shopping with my sister, chatted over coffee with my StepMom, and had long late night talks with my Dad. It was exactly what I needed.

How about you loves? How was your holiday? I'd love to hear!

Ice Box Pumpkin Pie

Wednesday, November 21, 2012

Mmm, pumpkin pie is my favorite! I love this time of year when it's so readily available. This year I may have to try this recipe via Martha (ovbi).

Ingredients

For The Crust:
  • 16 cinnamon graham crackers, broken into large pieces
  • 1 tablespoon dark-brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted and cooled

For The Filling And Topping:
  • 3 teaspoons unflavored powdered gelatin (from 2 packets)
  • 1 can (29 ounces) pure pumpkin puree
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1 can (12 ounces) evaporated milk
  • 1 cup packed dark-brown sugar
  • 3/4 to 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground or freshly grated nutmeg, plus more for garnish
  • 3/4 teaspoon coarse salt
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon confectioners' sugar

Directions

Make crust: Preheat oven to 325 degrees. In a food processor, combine graham crackers, sugar, and salt; process until fine crumbs form. With machine running, slowly pour butter through feed tube and process until mixture resembles wet sand. Press crumbs in bottom and up sides of a 9-inch square baking dish. Bake until crust is deep golden brown and fragrant, 20 minutes. Let cool completely in baking dish on a wire rack.

Meanwhile, make filling: Place 1/4 cup cold water in a small bowl. Sprinkle gelatin on top and let stand 5 minutes. In a large bowl, whisk together pumpkin puree and cream cheese until smooth. In a small saucepan, combine evaporated milk, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt; bring to a simmer over medium. Add gelatin mixture and stir until completely dissolved. Pour milk mixture into pumpkin mixture and whisk until completely smooth.

Pour filling into cooled crust and refrigerate until chilled and completely set, about 3 hours (or wrap tightly with plastic and refrigerate, up to 2 days). To serve, whip cream with confectioners' sugar until soft peaks form. Top pie with whipped cream and sprinkle with nutmeg.

Wed Day

Traditions - emotionally charged tricky business. Currently the hubs and I are a baby nuclear family of two, so in many ways our traditions are our extended family's that we are just beginning to look at and interpret. Admittedly, the trickiest part has been traveling since our families are skattered from coast to coast; I know this is only going to get trickier as we and our siblings start having little ones of our own.

I think in the end flexibility will be key. We'll take our family traditions and adapt them to what works for us in the moment. It's interesting to look at which traditions are really special - my sister's cranberry sauce for instance, she doesn't even like cranberry sauce but makes it every year because she know's it's my favorite - and the traditions that you don't mind letting go of, like fruit in your christmas stocking for instance. I imagine that the hubs and I will take the ones that matter to us, add a few new ones, and sew them together into a patchwork quilt of warm-fuzzies that is just our own.

What are some of your special, and not so special, traditions?

Tuesday's Tips & Tricks

Tuesday, November 20, 2012

Holiday season is officially upon us - and with it, travel season. For most of my life, I've had a Mom in Southern California and a Dad in the Washington DC area, so I grew up going back and forth. That coupled with living abroad twice and subsequent international trips. and you could say I've spent my fair share of time in airports and on planes. Here are a few tricks I've learned along the way.

You can be comfy-cozy and chic at once:

My usual travel outfit consists of a good pair of leggings or jeans, a classic tank, cozy socks and sweater (see also this, and this), with a nice pair of (pull on) boots to pull it all together (and aid in security line speed), topped with a cute jacket and you're set. It's amazing what the right pair of boots and jacket can do. This basic formula is comfortable enough to get you through a 5 hour + plane ride, and won't have you looking like a total shlub at the end of your journey.

A great bag will do you wonders:

A nice looking, durable bag like this Marc by Marc Jacobs number, or a smokin tote will help to make security a breeze. Not only will it help you look pulled together, but if you're organized  all of your travel essentials will be close at hand. I also usually keep my baggie of liquids in my bag to further speed up the security line process, much easier than digging through my carry on to find it all.

You need a big scarf:

A nice big (soft) scarf that can also serve as a blanket is key, it looks good on and will save you in flight as the onboard temperature begins to drop. I don't care if your final destination is somewhere tropical, you'll be so happy you have the extra warmth on board.

Protect your skin:

If you're flying durring the day, please please please wear your sun screen - the UV rays are so much stronger when you're so much closer to the sun (a no brainier, I know). If you're taking the red eye (my personal favorite way to get to the east coast - I find it helps minimize the jetlag) go through your nighttime skin care routine before you leave for the airport. Then, if you feel the need to wear make up, I usually just wear a tinted moisturizer, concealer, a bit of cream blush, and some mascara. Flying is really drying no matter what time of day, so be sure you have some heavy duty moisturizer in your bag to apply before hand and in flight as needed. A good hand cream is also a nice luxury to carry.

Also, arrive early enough to have ample time to get through security. Being strapped for time at the airport is the worst. So stressful! Plus, if you're early enough to have extra time in the terminal  what better opportunity to read a bit and have a dink at the airport bar? Soothes away any pre-flight jitters.

What are your travel secrets?

Thanksgiving table

Monday, November 19, 2012

Looking for some Thanksgiving table scape inspiration? Check out this lovely little number. I love the sophisticated color pallet, the rustic touches of wood and linen, the hint of metallic glamour, and the flowers (amaryllis, ranunculus, privet berries, and kumquats) couldn't be prettier. I wonder what they're having for dinner, and if they'd have me over ...

Monday's Mantra

This week I am grateful for so many things: my loving family, my kind husband, wonderful and thoughtful friends, two sweet kitty cats, a steady and supportive job, and all of you who take time out of your busy days to stop by. Of course we all have desires and flights of fancy, but when I take a step back and really look at it all - I am very blessed.

Here's to a week of gratitude - tell me, what are you thankful for?

I can't wait - I'm so ready to get a way for bit and recharge my batteries.

I hope you all have a cozy weekend - meet me here Monday? I promise you won't regret it. ;-)

Thursday's {travel} Tidbit

Thursday, November 15, 2012

About a year ago I was lucky enough to be included in a delegation to South Korea. The purpose of the trip was to represent San Francisco at an international environmental conference - yada yada it was amazing and an honor. Truly, but that's not the focus of this post. After the conference concluded a few of us decided to do as the Koreans do, so we headed to a jimjilbang!

A jimjilbang is sort of like a spa. There are gender separated wet spas (saunas, communal baths, etc), and a dry spa area that's for everyone to mingel together. When you enter the jimjilbang, you head to your respective locker room and change into a uniform (see the photo above of us in the locker room, that's me at the top right). The dry spa is full of different sauna rooms (warm, to too-hot-to-stand), plus other rooms for meditation, or karaoke  or video games, some even have bars and restaurants  Crazy, right? People even sleep there! The wet spa has showers, bathing pools, and an area where you can get a scrub or massage. Naturally, we all got scrubs.

There really isn't a comparable experience in the US. Or so I thought ...

This past Monday, I was the only one of my friends with the day off of work, so I did what one naturally does. I went to a Korean Day Spa. I'd heard about the Imperial Day Spa before, but had never been - I was not disappointed, the place is awesome. It was actually really similar to my experience in Korea, except smaller. It's basically the two gender separated wet spas with less of the other various "rooms."

Upon entering, I was ushered into a locker room, where I disrobed (no uniforms here) and headed into the female spa area. Yes, you read that right - no clothes, if you go you will be naked in front of strangers. But it's okay, they're all naked too. Once you get past the "I'm naked and I don't know you" shock, it feels kinda fine and you sort of forget about it, plus no one else cares. It's really liberating actually.

I had an appointment for a scrub and massage, but made sure to arrive early and spend some time in the steam sauna, and the hot and cold baths. This softens your skin and get's you ready for the scrub. When my time came for the scrub, I was called into the room and directed to lay on top of a narrow plastic covered massage table - this is area is also communal. There were several other ladies getting scrubs and massages on their own tables in the same room. Then I was scrubbed thoroughly with-in an inch of my life by a very strong little lady in black underwear (this seems to be the "uniform," consistant with my experience in Korea). After you shed about 5 layers of skin, you are washed with milk, and massaged with oils until you are slippery and softer than you can imagine. It was awesome. I completely recommend trying it. It's relaxing, rejuvenating, and feels totally productive. Plus, what a unique experience, right? It was like stepping off the San Francisco street and entering a mini jimjilbang.

So what about you? Do you have a Korean Spa in your town? Will you try it? (I think you should)

bathtub planetarium

Wednesday, November 14, 2012

I'm filing this under: things I never knew I needed but am now obsessed with. It's a bathtub planetarium - yeah, a bathtub. planetarium. Mind blown.

"The Homestar Spa from Sega Toys is a planetarium for your bath that not only paints the room with stars, but includes Rose Bath and Deep Ocean graphic domes for changing to a different mood.

The waterproof planetarium floats in water and contains a bright light that projects out into the room, or even into the tub itself when flipped over."

I think I need this, oh yeah, and a bathtub.

Fancy Brussels Sprouts

Tuesday, November 13, 2012

Om nom nom - this dish has Thanksgiving dinner (or run of the mill Tuesday dinner) written all over it.

Brussels Sprouts with Pancetta and Balsamic Syrup

Ingredients:

½ pound pancetta (one thick slice), diced
1½ pounds Brussels sprouts, stems removed, halved
Olive oil
1 cup balsamic vinegar

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 400ºF.
In a large bowl, drizzle the halved Brussels sprouts with 2 tablespoons olive oil, tossing to coat.
Pour them onto a sheet pan and season them with salt and freshly cracked black pepper.
Roast the Brussels sprouts for 40 minutes.
While they're roasting, sauté the diced pancetta in a large non-stick pan, cooking until golden brown. Set aside.
Simmer 1 cup of balsamic vinegar in a small sauce pan over medium-high heat until it reduces by half, about 10 minutes. It should be thick and syrupy. Set aside.
Remove the roasted Brussels sprouts from the oven and pour the sauteed pancetta (plus any drippings) directly atop the Brussels sprouts, tossing to combine.
Transfer the mix to a serving platter and drizzle with the balsamic syrup.
Easy peasy, right?

Tuesday's Tips & Tricks

This is one of those "ah-ha, so simple, I don't know why I didn't think of it" ideas. Next time you have an abundance of fresh herbs, either from your garden or from being overly enthusiastic with a bulk purchase, freeze the leftovers in ice trays with butter or olive oil. The next time you cook, just pop one of those bad boys in the pan and viola, seasoning with a pre-portioned serving of oil. Genius, yes?

Chloe Early

Monday, November 12, 2012

If one is lucky, love is akin to a tender conflagration, beautiful, sweet, and passionate, with just a hint of danger. I recently discovered the artist Chloe Early and was taken by the movement and feeling in her collage-like paintings. I was especially struck by this piece, Black Gold Sun, to me this is a perfect depiction of a tender conflagration.

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream is the classic gold standard of creams - old school classic luxury in a jar (or tube). But it's more than just a moisturizer, you can use it as a subtle  highlighting cream, to groom your brows, to create that "wet" eyeshadow look, and yeah - it moisturizes like a dream. Plus, it's less expensive than you'd imagine. Nice, no?

Thursday's Tidbit

Oh wow, I love this living room. First of all, the slate walls with white accents, and that navy window treatment - perfection. The mantle covered in coral plus that gold mirror - delightfully whimsical. The barcelona bench, snugly sheep's skin, and pops of Asian art and textiles - yes please! There is such a great balance of varied textures and themes here, yet it's so well edited that it's not over whelming. Amazing. Bravo.
